Why ABS is a popular Chrome plastic

ABS is the most commonly used engineering plastics. But also widely used in chrome-plated plastics. ABS the surface of plastic products is usually high polishing mode and can get good results. This finish is consistent with the finish of the electroplated plastic . And ABS material characteristics, also very suitable for chrome plastics processing characteristics.

Traditional chrome plating method for plastics

First of all, it needs to be clear that electroplating can only be done on hard plastics. Because soft plastics may be subjected to stress during electroplating break. And the cost of chrome plating plastic is very expensive, if not particularly high requirements for product appearance, generally not recommended make plastic chrome plating. This work is not a plastic factory can complete, need to ask a professional electroplating company, the final product effect. It’s different.

Apply some nickel or copper to the parts, which is called electroless plating. Electroless plating means that the coating gives the plastic a guide electrical, so you can subsequently chrome plating. Without this step, the chrome plate will not be connected to the plastic part.

Four steps in plastic plating

  • Corrosion: plastic products into sulfuric acid and chromic acid mixed liquid so that the plastic surface produces fine holes.
  • Neutralization: remove corroded plastic products and put them in alkaline liquids. This is a key step.
  • Catalytic: Catalytic the surface of plastic parts to produce a thin nickel or copper coating to prepare for the last step of electroplating.
  • Electroplating: plastic products with negative charges are immersed in positively charged chromium ion containers. ions will be attracted to negatively charged coating layer up and attach to complete. At this point, the ion returns to neutral and electroplating are completed.
